It was so wonderful to see our guests enjoying a delicious afternoon tea when they attended our latest Garden Party on 5th August.

The garden at Alveston House Hotel looked beautiful and our gardener, Kathryn, did a wonderful job of imparting her vast knowledge of plants and shrubs to our keen gardening friends.

After a cloudy start to the day, the sun came out and shone all afternoon.

Local singer, Elisa, performed a wonderful selection of jazz which created a superb, lazy summer afternoon atmosphere in the garden.

We are delighted to be hosting another Garden Party with Afternoon Teas on 5th August 2011. 

The Garden Party will take place in the beautiful grounds of Alveston House Hotel, Thornbury, Bristol. 

We will be entertained by local singer, Elisa, who will be performing a variety of  Jazz songs which promises to create a mellow and relaxing atmosphere. 

Afternoon tea will comprise of finger sandwiches, delicious homemade scones with jam and clotted cream and our delicate sweet tartlets all, of course, accompanied by either tea or coffee.  For those wanting to add a little sparkle to the afternoon we will be offering Champagne Cocktails by the glass. 

Our gardener, Kathryn Mahon will also be on hand to answer any questions you may have regarding our plants and shrubs within the garden all of which will be labelled for your information.

Long lost friends catching up!

Thank you so much to those who attended our Royal Wedding Garden Party on 29th April.

With delicious, freshly baked fruit scones, strawberry jam and clotted cream, glasses of chilled Champagne, juicy strawberries and a ‘Royal Wedding’ fruit cake it was a Cream Tea fit for a King!

Jonathan Darley provided the live entertainment and was extremely popular with the crowd.

Our guests enjoyed the event so much they have asked us to host another Garden Party during the summer.  We will publish the date over the next couple of weeks but it is likely to be late June, early July.  If you are interested in buying a ticket – regrettably places will have to be limited – please let us know and we will give you advance notice.

This time of year brings out the budding gardeners in all of us.

Gardener and landscaper, Kathryn  Mahon, picutured right, has kindly given us some tips for an eco-friendly garden so we thought we would share them with you.

1. Deter slugs and snails from tender plants by placing bulbs of garlic or crushed egg shells around the base of the plants.

2. Try to buy plants and shrubs that attract bees and butterflies. Not only is this creating a lovely habitat for these creatures, but they will eat aphids and other insect pests as well.

3. Try to encourage birds into your garden. Not only are they beautiful to watch they will also help control caterpillars and other bugs that can destroy plants.

4. Try to compost as much garden material as possible.  If you have treated lawns with a mixture of weed/feed, do not use grass clippings to compost heap.  Most manufacturers  recommend to dispose of seperately for the first 4 grass cuts.  Always follow instructions on the box.

Lotto winners at Alveston House Hotel

Alveston House Hotel recently played host to a gathering of some of the region’s biggest lottery winners to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the National Lottery.

Across the National Lottery’s range of draw-based games and scratchcards, a massive 372 jackpot prizes have been paid out in the South West of England -  including the creation of more than 127 millionaires or multi-millionaires; while a staggering £675,969,995 has been paid out in major prizes in the region.

Winners attending the event included Derek Ladner who won the jackpot twice in the same draw, banking two prizes of £479,142 in July 2007; Elaine and Derek Thompson from Lyme Regis who were one of the National Lottery’s earliest milllionaires back in 1995 and Ed and Michelle Edwards who banked £1.9m only last year.

The group celebrated with a champagne reception in the hotel gardens before enjoying a 3 course lunch in Carriages restaurant.

Alveston House Hotel was proud to be a part of the massively successful Thornbury Carnival on 4 July 2009.

After a 14-year absence, the streets of Thornbury were lined with revellers enjoying an amazing procession of over 70 floats and exibitors.  We had a stall in a prime position on the Mundy Playing Fields and had hundreds of visitors asking about the hotel and enjoying our complimentary homemade scones with Jam and Cream.

Our colouring competition for the children was extremely popular and the entries are now flooding in.  Our Head Chef, Ben Halliday, will have the difficult job of deciding on a winner when the closing date for entries arrives next Monday.  We will be inviting the winner into the hotel to receive their prize and hopefully they will be getting their photo in the local paper as well!

Our special ‘Carnival Voucher’ offer has also proved very popular.  Many people who stopped to chat at the stall received a complimentary main course voucher to be used in Carriages Restaurant during July and August.
