We are incredably proud of our owner and General Manager Julie Camm following her performance at the World Championships in Slovenia last month.

Local paper, The Gazette, ran the following story this week.

“Julie Camm has returned from the World Combined Pony Championships without the individual medal she desired but full of passion and enthusiasm for competing in Europe again.

Julie Camm, who owns Alveston House Hotel, was representing Great Britain as an individual in Lipica, with her 14 year  old Welsh Section D pony, Thorneyside Emporer, also known as Billy.

They came eighth in the dressage overall, but Julie was delighted to have been placed first by the German judge on the judging panel.

They had a safe marathon and were fifth fastest in the water obstacle before going on to achieve a clear round in the cones with just five time penalties.  This meant they were 16th overall – the best position achieved in the competition by any British single driver.

Team GB came fourth overall out of the six countries who fielded a full competitive team, with Germany taking first place, followed by the Netherlands, USA, Great Britain, Hungary and Austria.

Julie enjoyed the atmosphere and was inspired by the high standard of competition.

She said: ‘Billy was fantastic throughout and performed well, but we had had a difficult build-up to training for the championships with Billy having undergone surgery and I think that had an impact.

‘However, the speed of some of the competitors was amazing and it was fantastic to be among such a high standard.

It has inspired us to train even harder for competition again, once Billy has enjoyed some much needed rest.

‘Before we left for the competition I had thought this might be our last event of this kind, but instead it’s filled me with determination to be selected for the next World Championships in 2013.

‘It was such a superb competition and we were honoured to be part of it’

There will be an aviation theme this year with lots of information about Bristol’s aviation history.  One famous occupant of Alveston House will also be remembered.  Captain Frank Barnwell built and flew the first aeroplane in Scotland in 1910 and was resident at Alveston House Hotel with his family from 1923-1938.

There will be lots to see and do and this year we will also have Chef’s delicious homemade Plum Chutney for sale.  We will be giving away free samples for you to ‘try before you buy.’

Congratulations to Janet Sutton, the winner of our recent free prize draw.

Janet wins a Weekend for Two including Dinner and a bottle of Champagne.  Janet, from Cullompton, Devon got married at Alveston House Hotel last October and is now planning to return
to celebrate her 1st Wedding Anniversary with husband Matt.

We were inundated with entries to the draw – regrettably we could only give away one weekend but we do plan many more competitions and prize draws in the future so please do keep an eye on your in-box and try again.

We are delighted to be hosting another Garden Party with Afternoon Teas on 5th August 2011. 

The Garden Party will take place in the beautiful grounds of Alveston House Hotel, Thornbury, Bristol. 

We will be entertained by local singer, Elisa, who will be performing a variety of  Jazz songs which promises to create a mellow and relaxing atmosphere. 

Afternoon tea will comprise of finger sandwiches, delicious homemade scones with jam and clotted cream and our delicate sweet tartlets all, of course, accompanied by either tea or coffee.  For those wanting to add a little sparkle to the afternoon we will be offering Champagne Cocktails by the glass. 

Our gardener, Kathryn Mahon will also be on hand to answer any questions you may have regarding our plants and shrubs within the garden all of which will be labelled for your information.

Long lost friends catching up!

Thank you so much to those who attended our Royal Wedding Garden Party on 29th April.

With delicious, freshly baked fruit scones, strawberry jam and clotted cream, glasses of chilled Champagne, juicy strawberries and a ‘Royal Wedding’ fruit cake it was a Cream Tea fit for a King!

Jonathan Darley provided the live entertainment and was extremely popular with the crowd.

Our guests enjoyed the event so much they have asked us to host another Garden Party during the summer.  We will publish the date over the next couple of weeks but it is likely to be late June, early July.  If you are interested in buying a ticket – regrettably places will have to be limited – please let us know and we will give you advance notice.

More exciting times  for Julie Camm - our owner and General Manager.

Not only has she been invited to Newbury Races to parade her pony Kasawell Black Jack in front of the capacity crowd but she will then be driving the starter to start the 2.15 and 2.45 race - and it’s live on Channel 4!

Make sure you are tuned in to channel 4 racing from Newbury on Saturday 26 March from 1.45 to see Julie and Black Jack in action.

We are busy finalising plans for our ‘Wedding Open Day’ at Alveston House Hotel on Sunday 6th March 2011.

Since launching our new ‘Inclusive’ Wedding Packages this month we have been inundated with requests for show rounds so we thought it would be a great time to open up the hotel and let couples enjoy the experience of what the hotel actually looks like during a Wedding Ceremony and Reception.

During the Open Day you will have the opportunity to taste delicious Canapes and sample our delightful House Wines and Sparkling Wines.

Carriages Restaurant, with its elegant decor and warm atmosphere, provides a wonderful venue for your Wedding Breakfast.  Tables will be laid with glistening glassware and cutlery and adorned with our pretty bridal posies which are included in our Wedding Packages.

Huge congratulations to Sianne Kilbane who has won a meal for two in Carriages Restaurant.

Sianne was one of hundreds who entered the free prize draw at the ‘World of Weddings’ Wedding Fayre on Sunday 9th January.

Head Chef, Ben Halliday,  has created a fabulous new a la carte menu with some really exciting dishes.  The new menu was launched on Monday and is already proving very popular with our regular diners.
