An Inspector Calls

Most people outside of the industry are unaware of how the AA awards both its stars and merit scores. The AA recognises around 4000 hotels across Britain & Ireland. The AA Merit Score provides consumers with a means of comparing hotels within the same star rating. This score is out of 100. The AA Merit Score is shown beside hotel entries in the AA Hotel Guide and on the AA web site

The AA Merit Score is based on the Star Rating Score. The reason for having the Merit Score (unique to The AA) is to be able to compare quality both nationally and locally, between hotels that share the same star rating. Alveston House Hotel is now at 84%. The nearest to that is a hotel at 80%.

A 17 page report studies the hotel in great detail and scores each department and service. The following is a summary of the Inspectors findings:

“It was good to return to Alveston House Hotel for this routine overnight inspection which proved to be another positive visit. Hospitality and service combined a good mix of a relaxed and friendly welcome with helpful and efficient service experienced throughout the stay. Bedrooms and bathrooms are very well decorated and furnished and include very good quality beds and bedding. Housekeeping displayed sound attention to detail throughout all areas of the hotel. Both dinner and breakfast offered a very good selection of well-cooked and presented dishes and all chosen courses proved enjoyable. Our award of One Rosette is again achieved. All public areas appeared in very good order including the well-furnished bar and restaurant. The pleasant garden and large car park are both welcome features.”
